A new public art installation has been installed in Marpole. The City of Vancouver Public Art Program is installing a colourful artist-designed crosswalk on Granville Street in front of the Marpole Safeway. The design is a beautiful weaving pattern by Musqueam artist Robyn Sparrow. It compliments the existing weaving installation along the sidewalk of the Safeway that has been in place since 2013.
This mural is different from the existing street murals on several Marpole side streets. Those murals were painted on and reapplied several times over the years. For this art installation, Square One Paving will be using specialized equipment for heating the coloured material and fusing it to the asphalt surface for durability. Once installed, the crosswalk artwork will have a life expectancy of 3-5 years.
Please note that there will be partial lane closures on Granville Street during this work and some parking and bus service impacts.
City crews are making every effort to minimize the impact of construction on your daily routines and will expedite the work as quickly as possible. A Noise By-Law exception has been granted for this work, and every effort will be made to minimize noise, especially at the early hours.
