The City of Vancouver and TransLink are currently proposing substantial changes to bus prioritization lanes along Granville Street. The Marpole BIA believes that if these changes are implemented as proposed, they will have a devastating impact upon the economic viability of small business members and the livability of our community.
The City of Vancouver and TransLink are proposing to double the current peak parking removal to include both sides of the street during both the morning and afternoon peaks, see graphic below.
They also propose to extend peak parking removal times by one hour in the afternoon (until 7 PM) and until 10 AM in the morning.
Total new proposed parking removals is almost a 10 hour increase per day in no parking zones on Granville Street, and 24/7 removal proposed for the east side of the 8600 block Granville. These measures do not take into account small business viability, local economy or the livability of our community and are not acceptable,
The reasons cited by the City and TransLink do not pass muster. Transit efficiencies for in-service buses will be minimal, but the potential damage to our small businesses and the livability of our community are incalculable.
Proposed Changes
The Marpole BIA does not support such punitive and damaging parking restrictions, and is opposed to these proposed changes. We are actively working with City Council and City Staff to take these proposals off the table. We are willing to discuss measures that support transit but do not devastate our businesses and our community.
